Muntjac
Facts
Originate in Asia
"Barking
Deer" they can emit a very loud barking sound. The females
have a higher pitched cry.
The age of
maturity is about 2 years
Males
mature around the height of 14"-16"
Males have
short horns that are about 3" long & tusk-like fangs about 1" long
Females
mature around the height of 10"-14"
Gestation
is about 7 months.
Females have one
baby.
Our Muntjac
Opinions
They become
very attached to their owners but are very wary of strangers.
They are
happy being an only muntjac and are less nervous that way.
Bottle-fed babies that live in households with other animals & children
adjust well to the goings-on. We recommend if you want one for a pet to
have just one bottle-raised female. We don't know that much about the
behavior of the mature male to be able to say if they would be good as pets.
We use
Purina Kid Replacer milk to bottle-feed. The mature deer eat
Purina Deer Checkers without corn, alfalfa & fruit & vegetable scraps.
They have salt blocks & deer mineral blocks. They are wormed with
Panacur about every 3 months.
We keep our
Muntjacs in a 4' cyclone fence. They each have a
medium-size igloo doghouse. They love hiding places & tall grass.
After
losing all our little muntjacs we are guessing their life-span is 7-12 yrs.
